Subject: Deep Concern Regarding U.S. Pressure on Romania in the Tate Case
Dear Ambassador Dyer,
I write to you today with deep concern regarding reports that the U.S. administration is
exerting pressure on Romanian authorities to lift restrictions against Andrew and Tristan
Tate. This development defies all legal and moral principles and represents a troubling
contradiction to the values that the United States has long stood for in the global fight
against trafficking in persons.
Over the past years, Romania has made significant strides in strengthening its antitrafficking framework. Since 2021, when the Romanian Government prioritized antitrafficking efforts at the highest level, we have worked closely with the TIP Office and international allies to implement a new strategic approach in combating human trafficking. These efforts have been instrumental in achieving tangible progress and reinforcing Romania’s commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
As a former U.S. Department of State Fulbright/Humphrey Fellow, former State Counsellor in the Chancellery of the Romanian Prime Minister, and the first National AntiTrafficking Coordinator in Romania, I have dedicated my career to the protection of human rights and the eradication of human trafficking. We have worked together in an extensive effort both to fight against modern slavery and to protect Ukrainian refugees, in my capacity as Coordinator of the Romanian Response to the UA Refugee Crisis in the Romanian Government. My extensive experience in both governmental and nongovernmental sectors has provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and necessities in this critical area.
I would also like to take this opportunity to personally express my deep appreciation for
your unwavering commitment to the fight against trafficking in persons. Your leadership in this field has been a source of inspiration, and I sincerely value the assurances you provided to me during my official visit to Washington, D.C., at the U.S. Department of State’s TIP Office in April 2023. During our discussions, you reaffirmed the shared commitment of our nations to eradicating human trafficking and protecting victims, strengthening the bond between our countries in this crucial fight.
The prosecution of the Tate brothers was a priority both for Romania and for our American
partners, with significant resources and legal expertise dedicated to ensuring justice.
However, it has come to our attention that official and unofficial channels within the U.S. administration are now pressuring Romania to lift restrictions on these individuals. This abrupt shift in approach is deeply concerning and raises serious questions about the consistency of the U.S. stance on combating trafficking in persons.
We must ask:
• How are we to understand this sudden and inexplicable change in attitude?
• How should I, as a former National Anti-Trafficking Coordinator of Romania, and
my colleagues in government and civil society interpret this reversal?
• How should Romania proceed in reporting to the TIP Office, given that we are being pressured to undermine a case that was a strategic priority not long ago?
• More critically, should we still trust and report to the U.S. TIP Office if our commitment to justice is being compromised by political influence?
These questions demand immediate and transparent answers. Romania has stood as a committed partner in the fight against trafficking, and we have relied on U.S. leadership to uphold justice, human rights, and democracy. It is deeply unsettling to feel that our country is now under unjust pressure from the very ally that has been a driving force in our progress.
I urge you, Ambassador Dyer, to clarify the position of the U.S. government on this matter and to ensure that the integrity of our shared fight against trafficking remains uncompromised. Any actions that undermine the legal process and the protection of victims must be addressed with the utmost seriousness.
I appreciate your immediate attention to this critical issue and look forward to your
response.
Sincerely,
Maria Madalina TURZA
